O'Neal Holds Sports Recognition Ceremony
The O’Neal JV/Varsity Sports Recognition Ceremony was held on Monday, May 20th in the Hannah Center Gymnasium.
Former O’Neal Athletic Trainer Pat Tanner was the keynote speaker. He spoke of his different jobs in his career and the lessons he learned at each stop in his journey. Mr. Tanner is currently the head athletic trainer at FC Cincinnati.
Teams from all seasons were featured with a summary of each team’s success from the coach who also presented the Most Valuable Player, Most Improved Player, and the Falcon (Spirit) Awards for each team.
The ceremony culminated with program-wide awards whereby an appointed selection committee determines the coach of the year, male and female outstanding athletes of the year, and team of the year.
JV/Varsity Girls Basketball Coach Donna Taylor was awarded Coach of the Year. Marking her first year as head coach, she led her team to win the School’s first-ever girls basketball state championship. This coach must have demonstrated a strong ability to develop and improve both individual and team performance through exemplary leadership and expertise in coaching their sport. They also should exhibit traits of leadership within the athletic department by exemplifying the program’s core values of integrity, achievement, and commitment.
Outstanding Athlete Awards were presented to Ashanti Fox, MVP for varsity girls basketball, and Boyd Kenney, MVP for varsity boys soccer, and varsity boys basketball, and also a team member for varsity baseball. These recipients possess outstanding athletic ability, have received all-conference recognition and/or all-state recognition in at least one sport, and demonstrated traits of leadership with the team.
Team of the Year was awarded to the varsity boys track and field and varsity girls swimming. Seeded 11th, the varsity boys track and field team put their resilience and determination into action to earn a 3rd-place finish at the state championship. The varsity girls swim team won the state championship. Award recipients must embody the qualities of passion, resilience, and a will to compete while also showing successful results in winning games in conference and state play.
This school year, O’Neal athletics claims state champion teams for varsity girls golf, varsity girls basketball, varsity girls swimming, and varsity boys golf.
