O’Neal Students Hear from Paleontologist Robert Allen, Receive Fossil Donation

On Tuesday, O’Neal sixth and ninth grade students had the unique opportunity to hear from paleontologist Robert Allen, who shared his experiences in fossil discovery and the path to becoming a scientist in his field.
Allen, who has dedicated years to uncovering prehistoric remains, spoke about his work and the fascinating fossils he has uncovered, including the lower jaw fossil of a mammoth he discovered in the Aucilla River in Florida during a diving expedition for the Florida Museum of Natural History. In a generous contribution to the school, he and his wife have donated this significant fossil, along with additional displays such as mastodon teeth, to enrich student learning.

His presentation provided students with insight into paleontology, offering an up-close look at ancient specimens and the stories they tell about the past. Future plans include showcasing these fossils in the McMurray Library, allowing students and faculty to engage with these remarkable pieces of history.
