Starting in the Fall semester of 2025, The O’Neal School and Sandhills Community College have teamed up to offer a joint Career and College Promise Program. This partnership will allow O’Neal Upper School students to access free college credit courses taught by Sandhills Community College professors.
Mrs. Bertagnole accompanied the fourth graders on their caroling tour at Pine Knoll and Bell Meade retirement communities. The students sang holiday favorites including “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” “Jingle Bells,” and “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.” They showcased their small group selections and ended with a winter medley sing-along. The residents were so delighted, they treated the students with hot cocoa and chocolate chip cookies between performances. Another tradition-in-the-making in the O’Neal Lower School!
From November 14th to 17th, O'Neal's Model United Nations (MUN) team attended the 44th Virginia Model United Nations (VAMUN) conference at the University of Virginia. Representing a diverse mix of 12 students, ranging from freshmen to seniors, the team showcased their dedication, preparation, and skill.
O’Neal inducted 12 students into the National Honor Society on Thursday, November 21st. During the ceremony, current members presented the four characteristics of membership: scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

This event is made possible through funding from the prestigious E.E. Ford Traditional Grant, which The O'Neal School was honored to receive in 2023.
The O’Neal School recognized upper school students for their high academic scores at an assembly before their peers recently. The Head of School Achievement Award is presented to the O’Neal student in each class who compiled the highest academic average for the past school year.

This year’s Bill Youngclaus Creative Writing Award recipients were announced at an end-of-year dedication ceremony.
Winners are chosen from each division. Representing the Lower School, the winner is third-grade student Iona Riggsbee for her poem “Reflection”. Iona is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carolyne Davidson and Ken Riggsbee. Representing the Middle School, the winner is sixth-grade student Abigail Schupp for her poem “In the Mirror”. Abigail is the daughter of Lt. Col. Phillip and Mrs. Stacy Schupp of Whispering Pines. Representing the Upper School, the winner is 11th-grade student Charlotte Mills for her poem “Voyager Golden Reflections”. Charlotte is the daughter of Mr. Stuart Mills and Mrs. Helen Probst-Mills of Pinehurst.
The O’Neal School celebrated the athletic commitments of Reily Johnson to Wake Tech Community College for Basketball and Olivia Maxwell to Campbell University for Cheerleading. The two athletes held their official signing ceremony before their family and peers on Wednesday, May 16th.
The O’Neal School will be hosting its third annual Signature Scholars Research Program (SSRP) symposium to showcase the research of five SSRP Scholars. The five 20-minute presentations will be held in McMurray Library of Bradshaw Hall at O’Neal. Presentations will be divided between Wednesday, May 22, and Thursday, May 23 starting at 5 pm. Refreshments will be served. Attendance is open to the public; however, seats are limited and a call or email to reserve your seat is required.
Science Department Chair David Williamson hosted the annual Earth Day Photography Contest. Students and faculty in all grades were invited to submit entries into three categories: Enjoying the Earth, The Earth Up Close and Landscapes and Wildlife. Three rising ninth graders have been chosen to receive four-year scholarships at The O’Neal School. Vivienne Rhue has been awarded the Helen Pringle Holmberg Scholarship. Arianna Cappiello and Zoe Mount are the recipients of the Hannah Marie Bradshaw Scholarship.

Wednesday, April 17th was a great day for the return of the O’Neal School Heritage Festival. Having great memories of attending the Heritage Festival at a younger age, members of our Upper School International Club wanted to see its return.
Last Monday, O'Neal students in all divisions had the opportunity to celebrate the solar eclipse. It was a special eclipse for many historical reasons and the astronomy students hosted a solar eclipse party.
The O’Neal School celebrated the athletic commitment of Grace Simpson with an official signing ceremony before her peers on Monday, March 25th. Simpson is joining Pepperdine University Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Programs.
The O’Neal Middle School Science Olympiad team placed runner-up in the regional competition on March 16th at St. Andrews University in Laurinburg, NC. Coached by science teacher Maggie Watkins, all of the team members medaled in the event. In addition, every team member qualified for the state Science Olympiad competition to take place at NC State University on April 13th.
The O’Neal Players will perform “James and the Giant Peach” on Friday, March 22nd @ 6:30 pm, Saturday, March 23rd @ 6:30 pm, and Sunday, March 24th at 2:00 pm in the Hannah Center Theater of The O’Neal School.
The O’Neal School is pleased to announce that Nicole J. Camastra has received a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program award in American Studies to Norway for the 2024-2025 academic year from the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.
The math club did it again with an all-school hour of fun by hosting a fabulous Pi Day. Dice making, floating boats, marble tracks, parachutes, egg drop, bridges, earthquakes and mystery architecture were the featured activities. Upper and lower school grades paired up as well as 4th and 5th grade. Congratulations Math Club!
This year's Young People's Fine Arts Festival accepted 377 entries from schools in Moore County. A combination of 30 paintings, drawings, mixed medium work, pottery and photography were selected among O'Neal students by their art teachers. Congratulations to all O'Neal Falcons who were selected to have their work showcased at the Festival.
O’Neal Thespian Society Members made their debut in thespian society competitions this year only to progress to the international level. Having been awarded superior recognitions in the state competition, all four O’Neal thespians have qualified for the International Thespian Festival Competition at Indiana University Bloomington in June.
The O’Neal School Varsity Girls Basketball Team secured a historic victory on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at North Raleigh Christian Academy by clinching the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA) 2A Basketball State Championship.
In an Upper School Assembly, Head of School John Elmore recognized three students receiving National Merit certificates. All seniors, Charlie Kuzma received a Letter of Commendation; Audrey Kim and Lauren Kuhn have been named as National Merit Finalists and each received a Certificate of Merit.
The O’Neal School’s Lady Falcons defended their 2023 state title at the NCISAA State Championships this past Monday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center with a score of 295 over The Epiphany School who came in second with 233 and 25 other NCISAA schools followed.
Congratulations to O'Neal's varsity Science Olympiad team for placing fourth at the regional competition at Fayetteville Technical Community College last weekend (2/10). Each team member medaled in at least one event. This achievement has qualified the team to participate (for a fourth consecutive time) in the state tournament in April.
