The O’Neal School is pleased to announce that John C. Elmore has been named Head of School of the 43-year-old college preparatory institution with 75 faculty and staff, and more than 400 students from across the Sandhills. Elmore replaces Alan Barr, who has resigned for medical reasons after five years of service.

Elmore brings a wealth of experience in independent education and has been deeply involved in The O’Neal School for the past year, serving as assistant head of school. He has worked as a teacher, college counselor and administrator for independent schools in Midland, Texas, Grosse Pointe, Mich. and New York City. Most recently, before joining O’Neal in 2013, Elmore served as head of upper school and director of studies at Greens Farms Academy in Westport, Conn., a school of more than 300 students and 42 staff.

“I am delighted to help build on our success and work with the talented teachers, staff and students at The O’Neal School, which has been transforming the lives of young people and molding future leaders for more than four decades,” said Elmore, who was selected by the School’s Board of Trustees.

Elmore is committed to developing student leaders and says in his Statement of Educational Philosophy that the “academic progress of the individual student” is the most important priority in education. He led the way this year on enhancing O’Neal’s curriculum, launching a science initiative and expanding electives in the Upper School. He also has been instrumental in helping create an international program, set to begin this fall.

Elmore holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Grinnell College in Iowa and a master’s degree in religion and ethics from Yale University.

“John is an excellent fit for O’Neal and already has strong relationships with staff, families and the community,” said Board Chairman Stuart Mills. “He embraces our values of developing academic excellence, strength of character and the physical well-being of our students.”
