Emily Kane, PhD Speaks to O'Neal Students & Families

The O'Neal School is delighted to announce that Emily Kane, PhD with nearly two decades of experience in higher education, will present a special talk titled "Making Extraordinary Experiential Learning Happen" on Thursday, October 17th, 2024, at 6:00 PM in the McMurray Library. This event is made possible through funding from the prestigious E.E. Ford Traditional Grant, which The O'Neal School was honored to receive in 2023.
Dr. Kane, currently the Director of Study Abroad and Associate Director of the Center for Global Engagement at Longwood University, has dedicated her career to fostering global education and expanding opportunities for students to engage in international study and cultural exchange. She has overseen numerous study abroad programs, guided institutional partnerships, and contributed to global engagement initiatives across disciplines and continents.

In her presentation, Dr. Kane will explore how experiential learning, particularly through global engagement activities such as study abroad and exchange programs, can create lasting and meaningful educational experiences. She will address key topics, including how families and educators can support bold steps forward for students while managing risks ethically and responsibly. Drawing from her extensive experience, Dr. Kane will offer insights into how students and their families can prepare for global learning opportunities and make the most of these life-changing experiences.

In addition to her evening presentation, Dr. Kane will also engage with O’Neal Upper School students in a morning session titled The Rough New Prizes of Research: How Widening Your World Can Answer Big Questions. In this session, she will inspire students to look beyond their classroom and community, encouraging them to craft questions and seek answers through curiosity and exploration. Drawing on her extensive experience with National Geographic, the Federal government, and universities worldwide, Dr. Kane will guide students in developing the confidence and skills necessary to broaden their perspectives and embrace global inquiry.

As a recipient of the E.E. Ford Traditional Grant, O’Neal supports innovative educational initiatives such as this event. The grant is also used to support the School’s Signature Scholars Research Program (SSRP) and faculty grants awarded annually. With support from the E.E. Ford Grant, O’Neal continues to seek out programs and resources to impact even more students and faculty members on campus and in the wider Sandhills community.
